Happy Birthday... me!

The perfect cake for an Iron Maiden fan :)

Wednesday, April 26, 2006

Another day nearer being another year older.

Been a bit out of it today. Just a little.

The things that trigger a memory.

A sound
An image
A smell

I really want to know what it is, cos i`ve only smelt it less than a handful of times, but it hits me like i`ve been punched in the stomach.

It`s an aftershave in case you were wondering what i`m on about.

After my brothers first accident. When he was getting better, but still in hospital, his girlfriend would come in and help him get ready for the day. This included shaving, then drowning him in what I assume was her favourite aftershave.

I don`t think David really knew or cared what it was at the time.

Anyway. This mental ordour image has ingrained itself on my brain.

It reminds me of wondering if my brother even knew who I was at the time.
It reminds me of sitting there whilst he stroked my hair. The first sign of any sort of recognition.
It reminds me of playing TOCA constantly on his ps1

All the emotion, stress, heartache comes flooding back in one wave whenever I smell that aftershave. My stomach knots up and I get a lump in my throat. Just for a moment I wonder if i`m stood in work or in the hospital.

The raw moment doesn`t last long. But it throws me for the rest of the day. It`s like there`s a fog infront of my eyes, And then th real world comes rushing back.

Nobody know`s whats going on in my head. Life goes on. All the petty squabbles of day to day work wash over me.

In and odd way it`s calming.

The thought that in x number of years. None of this is really going to matter.

And now...

...the end is near.

See that pic?

See it?

Thats the sight of Zara struggling to organise our NEW cupboards in the bathroom. Yes.

No more will the cordless drill see the light of day. Well not for a damn long time if I have my way. Still now it`s nearly over i`m pretty pleases with my work. Despite the mishaps, the concussion and the screaming arguments.

So then i`ll be back to raving about Ubuntu, and slagging off Windows which has now started to blue screen on me in protest of my defection to Linux after many years of flakey service.

Although a new computer would sort out my problems.

No i`m not just saying that because my birthday is less than 3 days away...nearly (paypal payments to

So now here I lay. Yes, i`m in the bath again. Hey it`s my bath blog....if it`s good enough for SoccerGirl to do her podcast from then it`s good enough for me to type from. At least you don`t have to hear/see me in here.

Anyway, here I lay surrounded by bathroom 'stuff'. Which is slightly better than DIY stuff, in that it smells a lot nicer.

Well thats it for tonight. No ranting or raving, moaning

Monday, April 24, 2006

Ok, it`s official.

I can`t do DIY. Well that`s not entirely true. I can do it up to a point.

And that point happens to be putting cupboards up.

And yesterday that point came crashing down. Fortunately my head broke its fall.

Was it the wall plugs? was it the screws? who knows. But down it came. So now I have a nice lump on the top of my head. But I wasn`t going to be defeated by Ikeas finest chipboard.

Cupboard 1 went up, and stayed. Cupboard 2 went up...and has also yet to make a bid for freedom from the wall. It looks pretty good. Would look even better if the door fram the cupboard is hanging above was level. But I`ve finally convinced myself...with help from Zara that there`s nothing I can do about that.

So now i`m starting to hate DIY.
I was never that keen on it in the first place.

There is a reason people set up as painters and decorators.

And i`m beginning to realise that reason is me.

Saturday, April 22, 2006

Screw it!

Well it`s been a day of bathroom fun again.

Shelves and cupboards are on the list of things to do this weekend. I`m getting pretty good with the ol` cordless drill and making nice neat holes in the tiles.

So as I lounge here in the bath this is the view I get of our nice, slowly becoming organised, bathroom. It might look a little blurry but I like my bath hot!

So it`s cupboards tomorrow then the floor to do. Then finally.

We`ll be finished!!

Then it`s my birthday. Which I really am doing quite badly at hinting about I think.

6 days to go people.

Thursday, April 20, 2006

Ok, it`s rant time.

Companies, corporations. Whatever. I hate them. As of this moment i`d chop off their heads and shit down their throats.

And after tonight I think Zara would do the same.

2 Steps to being pissed off:

1 Sign up on website to gain access. (Which also meant entering phone number)
2. Get phone call at 8:45pm trying to talk you into joining 'our wonderful bookclub'

So now Zara is stressed. Which means i`m stressed. We don`t need this hassle. We don`t need some numpty on the end of a phone talking at us trying to wear us down until we sign our life away to buy and endless supply of books from them.

We`re not interested. We would`ve signed up on the site if we had been.
We don`t need you to ring us late at night to try and convince us.
We don`t want you to ring back in a couple of days to give us time to think about it.

Now sod off.

Except we can`t say things like that to them as we`re not arrogant, rude or insensitive. So we sit their listening to them rambling on quietly trying to talk our way out of what obviousely is a deal of a lifetime.

Although I am damn interested in the SciFi & Fantasy bookclub.

Damn them.

and then there`s record companies. Don`t you just love copy protection?

Yeah, it`s great. And completely useless.

Half an hour using Sound Juice CD Ripper, EasyTAG and sound converter and the wonderfully new cd Zara had bought was sitting on my hard drive. And all because she wants to copy it to minidisc for the car and I can put it on my iPod.

A legitimately purchased cd in case any lawyers are reading!

So give yourselves a pat on the back EMI cos all you did was cause Zara and me a moment of grief and your wonderful new technology was as much good as a chocolate teapot.

And all you`re doing is MAKING people into pirates.

It`s no wonder is so popular.

Ah, Easter.

That wonderful religious time of the year.

If you`re a Christian: The God who created this universe sent His Son to die on a cross in order to save us from our sins and give us eternal life.

If you`re Pagan: originally the name of pagan vernal festival . . . Eastre, dawn goddess. Or something like that. I was trying to find a shortened version, but without pasting reams n reams of info then this is all you`re gonna get

Or if you`re me: Then it`s a 4 day weekend!..woohoo.

I`ve had a nice quiet morning as Zara had to work *insert evil laugh here*. Although that should end any moment now as she and my mum come over to do the wallpapering of the bathroom.

So until them i`m sat here in the computer room on the sofa having a completely geeky moment with my laptop on my knee, my videocasts playing on my pc through itunes. And my ipod strapped to my side. Ahh, so many security blankets!

Zara left me a list of chores to do this morning which I can proudly report I have all done. So hopefully I won`t get told off when she gets in ;)

T`was a bit strange getting to lay in bed whilst she ran around getting ready for work. But strange in a nice way, heh.

And impatiently sat watching my counter edge closer n closer to the magic 1000 visitor mark. I have no idea why. But is seems like a bit of a milestone.

Look ma, no hands!

Under pressure again.
Gotta type fast before my laptop battery runs out.

Which won`t be easy as i`m in the bath with the lights off so I can barely see my keyboard. I am slightly touch type proficient ie. I can finf the delete key really quickly!

Why am I in the bath with the lights off?

Well we still haven`t finished the bathroom yet so no curtain is up at the window and I really don`t like the thought of my neighbour across the road seeing me shake my thing as I get out the bath...especially as it`s not even half nekkid thursday yet.

So. I`m in a happy mood. I`m free, untethered, I have thrown off the shackles of wired networking once more!

Yes. My new wireless access point arrived today. No longer do I feel the restrictive bondage of the cat 5 rj-45 cable.

So no matter what crap life throws at me this week I shall brush it aside knowing my laptop if free to roam the house.

Fame & Success

I have to type quick tonight.
I`m under pressure.
Not only does Supernatural start in less than 5 mins now but if I don`t write anything then I don`t think Zara will let me get into bed.

You`d think we don`t talk to each other.
She likes to get her daily dose of Paddy`s Prattling.
And this from the woman who lives with me!

Ok, so if this post of prattling is full of typos and makes less sense than usual then you`ll understand why.

So where does the Fame & Success come from in today`s title. In another fit of full on nerdyness I got slightly excited (not THAT excited) when I heard my voice talking to me from my Ipod.

Yes my voicemail concerning Skype with Ubuntu was played in the MikeTechShow podcast. Yay. He even answered my query and commented on my 3 previous failed calls to his voicemail line whilst trying to use Skype under Ubuntu.

Anyway, the problem is half solved...if anybody cares!

Next on the list is getting my Ipod to talk nicely with Ubuntu.

So there you go. Not exactly earthshattering. Not gonna win me any prizes or get my name up in lights. But in my own little way it made me smile.

I know. I`m sad.

Supernatural will be on in a minute, Zara will want to read my waffling and then the world will be a happy place again.

Saturday, April 08, 2006

Not sure I should be posting anything here tonight as everything is against me.

I`m tired
I`m drinking Glenfiddich
I`m in the bath, with the lights out cos we have no curtains up and I don`t really want the neighbours seeing me naked
The room is full of paint fumes

So if I start talking about the pretty pink elephants flying round the room you`ll know why.

All things considered I`m in quite a good mood. I was up early doing the grouting in the bathroom. Now have to spend tomorrow scraping all the excess off.

Me. Up early. At the weekend. Doing DIY for fraks sake!

My ex wife would turn in her grave if i`d had the chance to do away with her and put her under the patio.

I`m turning more into a geek as time goes on. I`ve been using Ubunto pretty much all the time on both my laptop and main pc. As soon as they find a way to use Itunes in it, and play games then i`ll be there full time!

Although I don`t play games that much now. Maybe I AM getting old. I used to be able to sit up until 4am playing Civilisation on my Amiga night after night. But now. barely 2 hours can pass and I need a break. Or Zara is trying to get me to join the real world for something dull and eating!

Anyway, time for a gripe.

The one thing that hacks me off more than anything when I`m online is Instant Messaging.

Not the actual act of instant messaging. But the times went people don`t message you back, It really fucks me off when I send a message saying hi and don`t get a reply.

I don`t mean the times when people are marked as away or busy. But the times they`re just sat there. And several minutes later they log off.

Now i`m thinking. They know i`m here. They have a message from me. And they just go. Just a quick hi n bye isn`t much to ask for. It`s just plain rude if you ask me. Maybe they just don`t feel like chatting. Or don`t feel like chatting to me...fine. But don`t just fucking snub me and log off thinking I won`t notice.

Ok, I know I shouldn`t take it personal. But I tend to behave online like I do in real life. Which is probably kind of scary. Well, I mean I`m not rude, or ignore people or anything. You wouldn`t do it if someone you knew came up to you in the street and said hi and you just kept walking.

Maybe it`s the whisky winding me up. So I`ll leave it there before my blood pressure gets too high!

In the great scheme of things it`s not a major problem. But in the here and now it pisses me off.

Damnit, I hate ending on a sour note.

So...umm....fluffy puppies!

There, that`s better.

Oh this is just classic!

A mobile phone salesman was hauled off a plane and questioned for three hours as a terror suspect - because he listened to songs by The Clash and Led Zeppelin.

Harraj Mann, 24, played the punk anthem London Calling and classic rock track Immigrant Song in a taxi before a flight to London.

The lyrics to both tracks made the driver fear his passenger was a terrorist...more

Totally useless fact

Ok, this only works if you write the date as MM/DD/YY

Today at two minutes and three seconds after 1:00 in
the morning (and at 1:00 in the afternoon), the time and date will be 01:02:03 04/05/06.

That won't happen again until 2106 (you may not be around to see it)....

We who write the date as DD/MM/YY have to wait until 4th May this useless fact.

Well i`m not actually. I`m laid here in the bath with Zara doing DIY!

And I mean DIY in the bathroom renovation kind of way.

This is going to be the most perfect bathroom ever. Or at least it would be if Zara wasn`t saying 'oh, i`m not happy with that'' -out come the -whatever is needed to put it right- and she`s off again.

As long as the bath water is hot and the neighbours can`t see me then i`ll be happy with this bathroom,

Ok, the cats are here now. Garfield wants the sink tap on so he can have a drink.

Sigh, it must be nice to relax in the peace and quiet after a hard days work. I shouldn`t complain too much. Zara is working damned hard on this bathroom. So i`m not. Complaining that is.

And whilst I remember I shall introduce my newest tenant 3rd Times a Charm who has promised to be a model tenant and not leave pizza boxes everywhere.

Monday, April 03, 2006

Not too keen on Mondays either

Ok, i`m weak. I couldn`t take going cold turkey anymore!

So now here I am in a nice hot bath with my laptop and several metres of network cable trailing between it and my router.
I`m connected again. Sigh.

Although the connection does keep crapping out every so many minutes. But that could be either my crappy laptop or crappy ethernet cable.

So what`s wrong with Mondays then?

Well apart from it being the start of another crappy week.
And apart from it means i`m another day older, and another day nearer being 36!

Umm, nothing really.

Although the day did go slightly downhill when my work van broke in an alarming way. Fortunately I wasn`t driving it, otherwise I may not be here to tell the tale!

So now i`m without a van. And have to use my/our own car/fuel to get to work. Damnit.

One of the slight perks I get is having the satisfying thought that my boss is paying for me to get to work.

I`m sure there`s more I could moan about but my brain is tired and Supernatural is on in less than 10 mins now.

Sunday, April 02, 2006

I don`t like Sundays

What a day!

It`s been up and it`s been down. Then it was up again.

Feeling quite dizzy from it all.

It was bathroom day. Yes, we`re still doing that! Just a bit more decorating then it`s done. But anyway. We got a shiny new pull switch `cos Zara wanted and shiny new one. So being the careful soul I am. And not wanting to electrocute myself; I turned the power off and got busy taking the old one down.

After a lot of swearing, grunting and sweating, no we hadn`t stopped to have sex!, the shiny new light switch was fitted. Electricity was switched on. Things switched on in a cocophany of pings, clicks, whirrs and beeps. All except my poor scanner. And. More importantly. My wireless access point.

After more swearing, grunting and sweating. I came to the conclusion that the access point was dead.

Passed on!
no more!
ceased to be!
expired and gone to meet 'is maker!
Bereft of life,
rests in peace!
kicked the bucket
shuffled off 'is mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisibile!!

It is an ex access point!

Ok, so twisting a few Monty Python lines was a little extreme. But you get my point.

I was stressed. I was past the point of stressed. So how was I to deal with this hightened level of stressfulness?

Yeah, that would help.

But funnily enough it did. So we spent the rest of the afternoon, and half the night sticking up polystyrene tiles on the ceiling.

It`s not the best ceiling tiling ever done. But it`s ours.

Afterwards food was eaten, tv was watched and I relaxed in a nice hot bath and gazed at out wonderful ceiling. Had to do something. Couldn`t get on the damn internet from my laptop!

And then. I hit ebay.

A Belkin access point the same as my expired one was on ebay. I`d been watching it all day. And with less than a minute to go I stuck a high bid in and won it for £16.00!

Yay me.

So now i`m happy again. Or at least I will be when it turns up.

I think Zara was going to move out until I had my laptop sorted. I don`t know what she means by that.

I usually take these setbacks quite calmly ;)

Bad blogger

Damn it`s late. Or is it early.

Well I`ve been a bad blogger the past few days. Just adding links I find interesting and nothing else. Or is that part of blogging? hmm. Maybe I don`t have to keep posting deep and meaningful stuff ALL the time.

I`ve been lazy I think. I haven`t been reading and commenting in the blogs I reularly read. And i`m feeling kinda guilty for it. Although not many have commented on my stuff.

Yes i`m a comment whore.
AND nobody has left me any voicemail messages.

So double humph.

I don`t mind. Much. My visitor counter is slowly creeping to 1000 visitors. Which I find kinda exciting in my sad own little way.

And yet again i`ve failed in my landlordly duties and haven`t introduced my new tenant. So before her week is up please go and visit the very lovely and slightly deranged (in all the nicest ways) Chase over at Taste the world. Oh, and don`t forget to comment!
